What is the Hardest Part of being on a Detox Diet?
It’s a common belief that the first three days of a Detox diet are the most difficult.  Once you get
over that hurdle, it tends to get a little bit easier as you go.  You will most likely experience
unpleasant side effects like hunger pains, nausea, headaches and irritability, but these side
effects usually decrease as you go along.  These are all just your body’s way of responding to
the fact that something that it’s used to is being dispelled from it- the toxins that are released
during detoxification.

Author Bruce Fife talks about the difficulty that most people experience during detox diets,
especially in the first few days, in his book “The Detox Book.”  He said that the problems that may
occur are things like stomach grumbling and feeling empty which may be accompanied by pain
and weakness or fatigue.  He explains that these are all just a result of the body getting rid of
toxins and things that are bad for it.  Fasting helps increase detoxification but may also increase
the likelihood of experiencing these symptoms.

Elson M. Haas and Buck Levin talk more about potential side effects of Detox diets in their book
“Staying Healthy with Nutrition.”  According to these authors, people also may experience
increased sensitivity and feeling a bit off balance.  Things like the sound from the TV or music
can be irritating or sound different than they did before.  Sense of smell is also heightened,
which can be positive or negative.  Another potential side effect can be a thick white or yellow
coating on the tongue.  This is definitely unpleasant, but can be dealt with if you want to reap the
benefits of a cleanse.

It’s not uncommon for people to give up after a few days, as Detox diets can be very depriving
and the side effects can really be bothersome.  If you can just hold on for the first three days or so
though, it gets a lot easier after that to deal with side effects or they tend to reduce or go away
completely.  You also start to feel more energized and you start to feel what the Detox is doing for
you.  It might help to remember that it took a long time for your body to become addicted to certain
foods and toxins so as you’re taking them out of your body, you’re going to experience some
withdrawal systems, but they’re not permanent and are a small price to pay for the benefits that
you’ll get from completing a successful Detox.

Although Detox diets can present some challenges, they have very positive results when
completed so they are typically well worth the negative things that you may experience in the
beginning.  You’re doing your body a favor by flushing all of the harmful toxins out of your system
and a few headaches or other uncomfortable side effects may actually save you a lot of
discomfort in the future with ailments that occur from the harmful toxins in the body.  Suffering for
just a few days will feel worth it when you see and feel the tremendous results.
