Is it safe to do a Detox diet like the Master Cleanse during
Pregnancy?
It’s widely known that it’s important for women to maintain and improve their health when they’re
pregnant.  Everything that goes into their body affects the blooming baby in their belly, so they’re
encouraged to make positive adjustments to their health and nutrition.  Many women looking to
be healthy while pregnant think that Detox diets sound great for getting healthy, but are they safe?

Going on a Detox diet while pregnant is NOT a safe practice.  This also stands after pregnancy if
a woman is nursing because her baby is still absorbing important vitamins and nutrients from
her.  If you’re planning on getting pregnant, undergoing a Detox diet beforehand is a good idea
because it will cleanse your body before the pregnancy process even begins and get you at
optimal health.  It will give the baby a fresh, toxin free environment to grow in, but doing a Detox
any time after getting pregnant can harm the baby.

Upon getting pregnant, you should always consult with your doctor about a good way to balance
your diet to ensure that you and the baby are at optimal health.  You have to closely monitor what
you eat and drink and make many healthy lifestyle changes.  Talking to a nutritionist helps too.

Although pregnant women can’t do a full- on Detox diet, they can still use some of the Detox
guidelines in their everyday eating regimen to be healthy.  Fruits and vegetables are healthy, of
course.  Getting those of the organic variety if you are able to prevents you from ingesting the
harmful pesticides that regular produce are grown with.  Drinking a lot of filtered or bottled water
also flushes out the system of toxins.  Pregnant women also shouldn’t drink alcohol or coffee or
smoke.

Detox experts will tell you that if you try to do a Detox diet while pregnant that you can shock your
system, potentially harming yourself or your baby.  Author and diet expert Cathy Wong talks about
some of these negative side effects in her article “Detox Diet IQ Quiz.”  She explains how toxins
that are released during a Detox diet could potentially get to the growing baby, causing harm to
them and their development.  If toxins end up in the baby’s or even the mother’s bloodstream,
this can cause many complications.  This is why going on a Detox diet prior to getting pregnant at
all is the best idea if you want to flush out your system before the baby comes.

In the book “herbs for Detoxificaton” b y C.J. Puotinen, there are recommended guidelines to
follow for a “precleanse phase” prior to conceiving a baby.  A few of these guidelines can be
carried over after the baby is born, such as including raw vegetables, fruit juices, root teas,
probiotic foods and filtered water in your diet.  Basically, you want to avoid anything that might
contain toxins or chemicals if you’re able to, ensuring that you are at optimal health.

The above tips are perfectly safe for pregnant women, but a full-fledged Detox diet is not.  If you
want to have a healthy pregnancy resulting in a healthy baby, make sure that you’re safe and
don’t undergo a Detox diet while pregnant or nursing.
